Online Appendix for “Domestic Trade Frictions and Agriculture”

چکیده
In this section I characterize the optimal choices of farmers. I discuss the optimal choices of farmers for a plot ω, conditional on allocating a positive fraction of plot ω to the production of crop k, (φi,k (ω) > 0), an event I denote ω ∈ Ωi,k. Then I move on to prove the three main Propositions in the paper. Using Assumptions #1 and #2, I first show how to calculate the fraction of land allocated to crop k. In equilibrium, ω ∈ Ωi,k implies φi,k (ω) = 1, so each plot ω is fully specialized in one crop k. Second, I derive the distributions of land quality, yields, revenue per unit of land, and rents, conditional on ω ∈ Ωi,k. Third, I derive the optimal relation between land shares and revenue shares for a given region.

Domestic Trade Frictions and Agriculture
I develop a model of heterogeneous land quality and study the relation between trade, farming productivity and welfare in Peru, where high domestic and international trade costs pose a major barrier to efficient farming. To quantify the model, I use a new dataset on spatially disaggregated crop prices, yields and land allocations. I then use the model to measure the welfare and productivity eff...
متن کاملOnline Judgment in the Context of International and National Rules: Ethical and Legal Challenges
Background: Online judgment is an economical and faster way than the judicial one. With the development of technology in recent decades, it has also been possible to make judgments online. Although few countries have incorporated this approach into their laws, online judgments are being developed and implemented in various areas such as international trade or intellectual property. The pres...
متن کاملIntersectoral Distortions, Structural Change and the Welfare Gains from Trade
How large are the welfare gains from trade when factors are misallocated due to domestic distortions? In this paper I provide a quantitative answer to this question by incorporating distortions to the allocation of labor across broad sectors into a model of structural change and Ricardian trade. Calibrating the model using 36 years of data for a diverse set of countries I find that (1) gains fr...
متن کاملInformation Globalization, Risk Sharing, and International Trade
Information frictions are often invoked to explain low levels of international trade beyond those that measured trade frictions (tariffs, transportation costs, etc.) can explain. But to explain why international trade is lower then domestic trade, home firms have to know something that foreigners do not. Without information asymmetry, domestic trade and foreign trade would be inhibited equally....
متن کاملObstfeld and Rogoff’s International Macro Puzzles: A Quantitative Assessment∗
Obstfeld and Rogoff (2001) propose that trade frictions lie behind key puzzles in international macroeconomics. We take a dynamic multicountry model of international trade, production, and investment to data from 19 countries to assess this proposition quantitatively. Using the framework developed in Eaton, Kortum, Neiman, and Romalis (2016), we revisit the puzzles in a counterfactual world wit...
